PICO-8 Based Development Milestones: Sprite Management and Tile Optimization

Meeting - 2026-03-05

Our most recent development cycle was about fine-tuning internal workflows and solidifying the technical visual pipeline. During the weekly demo, our team reviewed the current action points, and we made significant progress in laying the foundations of the game logic. Moving along our priorities, we have also updated our Redmine tickets, so project management transparently reflects the current state of development. We are proud of the stabilizing modular structure, which is a prerequisite for the smooth implementation of future tutorial and teaser modes.

Mr. Zero successfully implemented the sprite and situation management system, as well as the handler modules responsible for screen initialization and refreshing. To strictly maintain code quality, the project underwent several rounds of refactoring, ensuring long-term sustainability and optimal resource utilization. To automate technical documentation, the ldoc system was introduced, making fresh code descriptions immediately available to the team by issuing the make docs command. This system-level approach significantly facilitates the future integration of more complex gameplay elements.

In the area of asset management, Mr. Three performed outstanding work by optimizing visual resources for the strict PICO-8 color palette. He unified the colors of three different backgrounds and then, after de-duplicating the tiles, merged all graphical elements into a single 128x128 .png file. This compression is critical for minimizing our memory footprint, while Mr. Two successfully completed the implementation of the focus mode, the timer, and the "budi" (toilet) module. These small but functionally essential elements already noticeably improve the dynamics of the gameplay.

During the meeting, we successfully clarified the previously vague concept of "Possibility of time-dependent triggers," which was crucial for advancing the event-handling logic. Although Mr. One's progress stalled this week, planning the musical foundations remains a high priority for finalizing the atmospheric elements. The team collectively analyzed the obstacles that arose, and we reaffirmed our faith in the chosen technical direction. Honest internal feedback and the joint demo continue to be our most important driving forces during development.

In the coming period, Mr. Zero will continue working on the sleeping state of the Norman character, the intro sequence, and the handler functions governing new days. Mr. Two's task will be the development of the event graph and the implementation of the minifier script, which will further optimize the final code for the constrained environment. Mr. Three will assemble the office, street, and home backgrounds from the prepared tiles to create the final locations. We expect Mr. One to soon begin composing the musical tracks, which will provide the final atmosphere of the game.
